Film Genre + Ukraine: A Lecture Series

Critic/Theorist and Studio member Richard Pettifer (Australia/Germany) developed and presented this 3-part lectures series hosted by Cultural Workers Studio.

Horror, Weepies, Misogyny

  • The series explored the power relations in genre filmmaking such as the Slasher film, Weepies of the 1940s-50s, and Pornography.
  • The lectures references well-known film theorists such as Laura Mulvey, Linda Williams, and Carol J. Clover.
  • All lectures were livestreamed and translated to Ukrainian with the support of Hanna Liashenko.
  • Connections were made to contemporary trends such as the so-called ‘manosphere’, superhuman filmmaking, and the perception of gender during the full-scale invasion.

Dinners, Karaoke, Filmmaking

  • Each lecture featured a Q+A session, and was accompanied by a traditional Ukrainian cuisine.
  • The lectures were followed by participatory karaoke.
  • The Lecture series was promoted by a series of short films co-created with Anita Kopylenko.
